A project to safeguard our heritage

The Maritime Immovable Heritage Census is an open and constantly updated tool of the Maritime Culture Plan. It collects, identifies and documents real estate assets associated with maritime culture along the Galician coast. This collaborative project requires the knowledge and involvement of local people and communities, since nobody knows the territory, its traditional names, historic buildings and the uses passed down from generation to generation better than those who live there. Citizen participation enables us to recover valuable information that is often preserved only through oral tradition, photographs and other means, and make it publicly available using new technologies.

Why is your contribution important?

Citizen participation helps to ensure the accuracy and diversity of the inventory. Individual contributions enable us to correct or supplement existing information and incorporate assets that have not yet been identified by the technical team for various reasons. The result will be a stronger, more representative and useful database for:

  • Enhancing maritime heritage for the cultural, educational and tourism sectors.
  • Raising awareness and increasing public access to the collective memory linked to the sea.
  • Territorial planning and management by public administrations
  • Development of academic studies and research.

What type of information can be provided?

We are seeking two main types of contribution:

  1. Additions to assets already included in the census, such as old or current photographs, traditional names (toponymy), historical documentation and oral testimonies.
  2. Proposals for new assets not included in the census, such as buildings or elements considered relevant to local maritime heritage (mills, lighthouses, docks, coastal crosses, etc.).

Contributions can include files in various formats (images, audio files, PDFs, etc.), as well as comments or corrections on assets already included in the census viewer.

Validation and publication of contributions

All contributions will be reviewed by the PCUMA team of advisors and technicians. Once validated, contributors agree to their contributions being included in the Galician Maritime Immovable Heritage Census viewer. During these months, up to November 2026, errors can be corrected and additional information or assets can be incorporated, thus consolidating this tool as a key public resource.

We look forward to receiving your contributions!

We are very grateful for your participation in this collective project to identify, protect and disseminate our immovable maritime heritage. Your collaboration is essential to ensure that this shared legacy endures and is valued as it deserves to be.
